Read the signal directly above the lane
A downward green arrow permits you to use the lane below it, subject to ordinary traffic rules. A red cross prohibits use of the lane below it. Look far enough ahead to recognise a change before entering a reversible, tunnel or managed lane.
A yellow diagonal arrow directs traffic to move into the adjacent lane in the direction shown: down-left means move left; down-right means move right. Check mirrors and blind spots, signal and move when safe before the lane closes. Do not stop abruptly under the arrow or cross into an unsafe gap.
Lane-control permission is not the same as junction permission. A green arrow above a reversible lane does not cancel a red traffic signal at the next intersection, a speed limit or a mandatory turn marking.
- Red X: do not enter or continue using the lane as an open lane. Follow the closure guidance safely.
- Green downward arrow: the lane is available in your direction.
- Yellow diagonal left: prepare to vacate to the left.
- Yellow diagonal right: prepare to vacate to the right.
