Location and destination symbols

Read every symbol in the learner manual’s location and destination tables.

Practice questions

Location symbols identify the place or route feature

Location symbols tell you what named feature you have reached or what type of route feature a board identifies. Read the symbol with its name or route number. A location panel does not assign right of way or instruct a turn by itself.

Distinguish a river-name panel from a water hazard warning, and a freeway symbol used inside a direction board from the regulatory sign that actually begins a freeway. One identifies; the other introduces a set of rules.

  • River: identifies a named river at the crossing.
  • Toll route: identifies a route on which tolls apply; plan for the indicated toll route or lawful alternative.
  • End of toll route: identifies the end of that toll-route designation, not the cancellation of unrelated traffic restrictions.
  • Dual-carriageway freeway: identifies this freeway type in location or route information.
  • Single-carriageway freeway: identifies the freeway type without implying a divided carriageway.
  • Interchange name: associates the junction/interchange with its name so you can confirm the intended exit.
  • Conservancy: identifies the conservancy area; continue to obey the separate speed, wildlife and access controls.

Transport, civic and service destinations

Destination symbols let a direction board name a facility without a long written description. Use the accompanying arrow and distance to plan the turn. The symbol does not reserve your lane for the depicted vehicle class: a bus-terminal destination on a guidance panel is different from a bus-only command.

Some similar symbols refer to different stages of a journey. A railway station is the destination itself; park-and-ride identifies parking where you transfer to the indicated service. A pickup point is different from a general parking area. Read the complete board before entering a dedicated facility.

  • Railway station: directions to passenger rail facilities.
  • Bus terminus: directions to a bus terminal.
  • Airport: directions to the airport; the aeroplane symbol is guidance, not an aircraft warning.
  • Dual-carriageway freeway: a destination/route direction involving that freeway type.
  • Single-carriageway freeway: a direction involving that freeway type.
  • Power station: directions to the named power-station facility.
  • Industrial area: directions to an industrial district.
  • City centre or central business district: directions to the central urban area.
  • Toll route: directs along a toll route.
  • Alternative route: identifies an alternative to the main route shown; follow its continuation signs.
  • Heliport: directions to a helicopter landing facility.
  • Mine: directions to the named mine.
  • Harbour: directions to the harbour or port.
  • Library: directions to library facilities.
  • Bicycle route: identifies guidance for a cycle route; it is not the same as a mandatory cycle-only sign.
  • Park-and-ride for trains: park before transferring to rail.
  • Park-and-ride for buses: park before transferring to a bus.
  • Pickup point: identifies the pickup facility; obey its stopping and waiting controls.
  • Parking area: directions to parking, subject to local bay and payment restrictions.
  • Minibus rank: directions to the rank; it does not authorise other vehicles to occupy reserved bays.
  • Toll plaza ahead: advance guidance about the toll plaza; choose the correct payment/vehicle lane in good time.
  • Border/customs post: directions to a border or customs facility.
