Pedestrians, crossings and animals

Give vulnerable road users time and space, and recognise when you must stop for a crossing or herd.

Practice questions

Yield at pedestrian crossings

Yield to a pedestrian crossing within a pedestrian crossing, slowing or stopping as necessary. Plan to stop before reaching the crossing, rather than braking after the vehicle’s front is already in it. Do not overtake a vehicle that has stopped at a pedestrian crossing: its driver may see a person you cannot see.

A pedestrian may be slow, uncertain or partly hidden. A child emerging from behind a vehicle is not made safe by your horn. Maintain observation on both sides of the crossing and avoid stopping in a position that hides people from another traffic lane.

Understand pedestrian signals

A steady red pedestrian signal tells pedestrians not to begin crossing. A flashing red signal tells a person who has already begun to finish crossing promptly and tells a waiting person not to start. As a driver, continue to allow a person already crossing to clear safely; a changing signal is not a reason to move into that person.

Stop when an authorised herd crossing requires it

Stop when directed by a traffic officer, by the applicable sign, or by a person leading or driving the animals specified in the rule. The manual includes cattle, horses and comparable farm animals. Allow the animals to cross completely before proceeding; do not divide the herd by forcing through a gap.

Approach animals at a speed that allows you to stop. Noise or a close pass can cause unpredictable movement. On a freeway, do not leave or allow animals in a place from which they can stray onto the road.

Worked situation

The left lane has stopped immediately before a marked crossing, while your right lane appears open. A pedestrian may be concealed by the stopped vehicle. Slow and stop as required; do not pass it at the crossing simply because you cannot yet see anyone.
